Uk Humor

I consider myself to be a comedy connoisseur. I loved Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Tina Fey before it was popular to do so, I watched The Mighty Boosh, The IT Crowd and That Mitchell and Webb Look long before they came to US television, and I listen to BBC Radio 4 shows on my iPod whilst commuting to school. I also make sure to insult Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia any chance I get (and here’s a chance so Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia are both unoriginal and unfunny). However, there is one comedy that I am ashamed to say I watch: BBC Three’s Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.

For those who have never seen Two Pints (as it is so lovingly referred to by fans), the show is centered around a group of friends who live in Runcorn (which is, according to urbandictionary.com, a “cesspit of a town in North West England”). Most of the shows jokes are ludicrously vulgar and unfunny. It’s all “penis” this, and “bumming” that, it’s really terrible. But anytime I run across it, I can’t help but watch it. Why could this be?

1) Susan Nickson

Susan Nickson is the creator of Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, and a few other shows with a similar style of humor (she’s kind of like the British Seth MacFarlane). She was only 19 when the show was commissioned. This should piss me off, but for some reason I’m sort of proud of a woman doing extremely vulgar comedy. It’s the same reason I love Sarah Silverman: because she talks about poop. It may not be very funny, but she does it, and as far as I’m concerned that’s one small step for a woman and one giant leap for womankind.

2) Jonny Keogh and Wesley Presley

Jonny Keogh (played by Ralf Little of The Royale Family) and Wesley Presley (played by Thomas Nelstrop, who was in an episode of Doctor Who) are the characters that I would consider to be the eye candy of the show. Obviously, you can see I have a type, and that type is pale dudes with huge Adam’s apples and jewfros. Which is the exact opposite of Two Pints’ resident dirty douchebag, Gaz Wilkinson (Will Mellor of Hollyoaks). Gaz is one of those creepy douchebags who thinks he’s the hottest guy in town (unfortunately for Runcorn, this is apparently justified). He’s gross and when he comes on screen he makes me regret my choice of viewing material. However, this is soon remedied by the character of Donna.

3) Donna

Donna (played by Natalie Casey, who was also in Hollyoakes and holds the record for the youngest recording artist to ever have a song in the UK chart) is the Rachel of Two Pints. By that I mean she is the most ambitious. I would also consider her to be the character most like myself. She was a student in the beginning of the series, she dislikes vegetarians and people who diet and she’s very bitchy and outspoken. Also, despite the fact that she wouldn’t be considered as someone with a “perfect body,” she did this in public (the part to which I am referring comes at the 1:35 mark, also it’s NSFW):

There is something admirable about Donna, in my opinion, more than any other character.

4) Sheridan Smith

I don’t know what it is about Sheridan Smith (who plays Janet, you may also recognize her from Gavin and Stacey and from the new season of Benidorm), but I fucking love her. She’s just adorable, no matter what she’s doing. I kind of have a lady crush on her for some reason.

5) The Delusion of the People Who Make the Show

Recently, because of the 7th series of the show, BBC Three began showing a lot of Behind the Scenes of Two Pints type stuff. And yes, I watched these. Because I watched them, I now know that the people who make Two Pints think the show is waaaaaay better than it actually is. Seriously, all of them really thought they were writing the greatest thing on TV. The writers/producers/actors said things like, “ooh, you never know what’s going to happen on Two Pints,” and “ooh, everyone watching really feels for the characters.” Now that I’ve seen this, I watch with an additional layer of irony. Every time something “dramatic” happens, I think, “ooh, I bet the writers think this dramatic twist is the best thing since M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense.” And that much delusion makes me laugh more than any “joke” in Two Pints ever has.
